語出《易經·繫辭下》：「君子藏器於身，待時而動。」比喻人平時應勤修學習，以待時機到來而一展長才。《梁書·卷二·武帝本紀中》：「若有確然鄉黨，獨行州閭，肥遁丘園，不求聞達，藏器待時，未加收採。」
